Check Out The First iPad 2 Commercial…

Over the weekend Apple released what we are pretty sure to be the first iPad 2 commercial made for television. It’s kind of sly how Apple tells you about many of the new features found in the iPad 2 while, at the same time, telling you that the your experience shouldn’t be just about those things.

Update: BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone Coming April 26th

Update: This rumor has turned out to be a hoax and is not true… Multiple sources have confirmed with RIM that Jim Balsillie attended no events this week…

Word on the street is that BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone is going to hit the App Store on April 26th. According to MacRumors, Research in Motion co-CEO, Jim Balsillie, said yesterday at a Toronto Social Media conference that BBM for iPhone would hit the App Store on April 26th.

“RIM had a Social Media conference today in Toronto, and my entire college business and marketing class was invited to the event. RIM’s co-ceo Jim Balsillie revealed that they plan to bring BBM and “other services” to iPhone on April 26 via the app store. Major news networks are expected to pick up on this very soon! Balsillie also revealed that they plan to release an update to the app this summer which will take advantage of a new “notification system”!!!”

Needless to say that, if this turns out to be true, it will be a huge deal for RIM and for a lot of iPhone users that have buddies still using BlackBerry devices.

Apple announces WWDC10 June 7th through the 11th

Apple has announced that the Worldwide Developer’s Conference 2010 (WWDC10) will be held in San Francisco June 7th through the 11th. WWDC is the premier technical conference where developers learn advanced concepts for creating innovative applications for iPhone OS and Mac OS X.

If I had to go out on a limb I’d venture that WWDC10 is where Apple will unveil the iPhone 4. We can’t say this for sure, however, it seems likely.

Registration for the 5 -day WWDC10 event costs $1599 and this gets you access to over 1000 Apple engineers and 5000 developers.

Graphics and Media
Internet and Web

Opera Mini for iPhone Approved

It took Apple a bit longer than usual, however, they’ve finally gotten around to approving Opera Mini for the iPhone. I honestly didn’t think that Apple would approve Opera Mini for iPhone as it has the ability to play Flash, which, of course, is a big no no on the iPhone. Opera Mini for iPhone is a free download and is available in the App Store.

Kindle for iPad App Confirmed

There have been a lot of questions about if Apple would allow a Kindle for iPad app into the App Store. I don’t think that there is any doubt that a Kindle app duplicates built-in functionality of the iPad, however, Apple’s rules when it comes to the App Store are vague at best. That being said, Kindle for iPad has been confirmed…

The way that I see it, Apple knows that there are tens of thousands of Kindle owners out there that may look at an iPad as their next e-reader, but, only if their existing investment in electronic books is transferable. To make a long story short, a Kindle for iPad app, although duplicates built-in functionality of the iPad, will help more iPads ship. Allowing Kindle for iPad into the App Store, at the end of the day, helps the bottom line.

Apple Now Accepting iPad Application Submissions To iPad App Store

Apple today announced to developers that they are now accepting iPad application submissions to the iPad App Store. If you get your submission in before 5:00 p.m. on March 27th you stand a chance to get your app reviewed for inclusion to the App Store at launch next month.

Apple Patent Application Details iGroups Location Based Social Networking For iPhone

Patently Apple uncovered a new Apple patent application detailing iGroups, a location based social network for iPhone users.

Apple is working on a new communications based social networking application that they’re simply calling “iGroups.” According to the documents published by the USPTO today, Apple’s iGroup will be a new service that will work on your iPhone and likely work with MobileMe. The idea is to allow groups of friends or colleagues attending such events as a concert, a tradeshow, business meeting, wedding or rally to stay in communication with each other as a group to share information or reactions to live events as they’re occurring.

It isn’t believed that the actual name of the new social network will be iGroups and the patent itself describes the mechanism, a cryptographic key system, used to protect the data being sent back and forth between the devices, GPS enable or otherwise, being used by members of the network.
